How and when should you plant water lilies?

Water lilies should be planted in a sunny location with a water depth of between 20-120 cm (depending on the species), in plant baskets with muddy, low-lime, nutrient-rich and humus-rich soil. The optimal planting time is April/May for hardy water lilies and June for non-hardy water lilies.

Which location is suitable for planting?

Water lilies are purely aquatic plants. But they are not suitable for fast-flowing bodies of water such as rivers. On the other hand, they are perfect for ponds, lakes and slow-flowing streams. The waters can be either slow flowing or calm to stagnant.

Even water lily lovers without their own pond can plant these plants. They grow excellently in containers. It is important that the location is sunny and not shady. Most water lily species like 4 to 6 hours of sunshine per day.

What should the bottom of the water be like?

The bottom of the water is ideally muddy. All water lilies like that. These plants can root well there. It is also important that the reason has the following properties:

  • calcareous
  • nutrient-rich
  • humos

Should you plant water lilies in spring or fall?

Hardy water lilies like the white water lily are best planted in April/May. Specimens that are not hardy and may have previously been overwintered should not be moved into the pond until June. It is perfect when the water has already warmed up to around 20 °C.

What water depth is important?

Depending on the species and variety, the water depth should be measured. Some water lilies cope best with water depths of 20 to 40 cm. This includes, for example, the dwarf water lily. Other water lilies need a water depth of 40 to 80 cm and others need a water level of 70 to 120 cm.

How exactly do you proceed with insertion?

This is what you should know:

  • do not plant in the bottom of the pond
  • It's better to place it in a plant basket (€8.00 on Amazon) and then lower it into the depth
  • tuber-like, thickened roots: narrow, deep plant basket
  • rhizoma-like roots: flat, wide plant basket
  • First put jute or newspaper in the basket
  • next layer: clay and sand
  • then: fertilizer
  • last the plant and cover it with substrate
  • Buds should protrude from the substrate

How are water lilies propagated?

The easiest way to propagate your water lilies is by dividing them. Division is recommended every 3 to 5 years anyway to keep the growth stable. Furthermore, water lilies often reproduce through self-sowing. Targeted sowing can also be carried out without any problems.

When do water lilies bloom?

Water lilies bloom at different times depending on the species. Some present their flowers at the beginning of May. Others don't show them until June. The individual flowers can survive for up to 10 days before fading. The flowering period can last until September.

Tip

While smaller species get by with one square meter of space, larger species usually need 2 square meters of space. Attention: If water lilies are planted too closely, their flowering will be suppressed.
