Hyacinths are poisonous to cats and can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps if consumed. It is recommended to keep hyacinths out of the reach of cats and if poisoning is suspected, drink plenty of water and consult a veterinarian.
Calcium oxalate and saponins harm cats
Hyacinths contain s alts of oxalic acid and saponins. Cats cannot get either substance. They respond with:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach cramps.
If you suspect that the cat has nibbled or licked a hyacinth, give it plenty of water to drink.
To be on the safe side, you should call the vet or go to the vet clinic straight away if you have larger quantities.
Tips & Tricks
Caution is also advised if there are dogs, small rodents or birds in the house. Hyacinths should be placed and stored out of the reach of animals. This is especially true for the tubers, which animals like to peck at or gnaw on.
