From late winter to spring, the primroses show their most beautiful side. They are in full bloom and bring color into the home. But are primroses even suitable for growing in the home?
Can I keep primroses in the apartment?
Are primroses suitable for the apartment? Yes, primroses can be grown indoors as long as they are placed in a bright, cool location (5-15°C) with plenty of moisture. Regular watering, phosphorus-rich fertilizer and removing wilted flowers ensure optimal care.
The best location – bright and cool
Primroses in the apartment should be bright, but not sunny. On a window sill that faces south, it quickly becomes too warm for the primroses. As a result, the flowers fade and last less long. In addition, the proximity to the heating creates dry air, which is not good for the primroses at all.
A north-facing window sill is more suitable. Ideally, the room is cool with temperatures between 5 and 15 °C. Primroses can thrive there. Such temperatures are rather unusual in the living room. Do you have such temperatures in your bedroom?
The alternative to a cool room: humidity
If you can't keep your primroses cool, you should provide them with plenty of moisture. It's best to spray them every 1 to 2 days with water from a hand sprayer (€7.00 on Amazon). But be careful: only spray the leaves and stems, but not the flowers!
What care do potted primroses need?
The top priority is: water! Primroses in the apartment evaporate a lot of water, especially during their main growing season in late winter and spring. This is intensified by turning up the radiators.
The primroses should be watered regularly and evenly. It is important to keep the soil moist. It is ideal if the soil never dries out and at the same time never drips with moisture. Low-lime, room temperature water is used for watering.
When fertilizing, the following points should be taken into account:
- fertilize once during the rest period (November to February)
- fertilize heavily from the start of budding
- fertilize every 2 weeks during the flowering period
- When repotting in early spring (replacing the soil), fertilization is not necessary
- Suitable fertilizer: liquid, rich in phosphorus
Primroses do not need to be cut. It is enough if you remove the withered flowers in time so that new flowers can form in their place. You should also remove wilted leaves.
Tips & Tricks
Primroses need temperatures around 10 °C for at least 4 weeks to bloom prolifically.
