Cats love bitter parts of plants. Crocuses are therefore not entirely safe for them because the flower threads and bulbs are very bitter. They contain a toxin that can seriously poison cats.
Are crocuses poisonous to cats?
Crocuses are poisonous to cats because they contain picrococin, which can cause stomach problems or severe symptoms of poisoning in the animals. To protect cats, crocuses should be placed out of reach indoors or planted outside so that cats cannot dig them up.
Keep crocuses out of the reach of cats
It is better not to care for crocuses in the house if cats and other pets are part of the household.
Both the crocus bulbs and the seed threads contain picrococin, which can cause stomach problems or even very serious symptoms of poisoning in cats - and other pets.
If you don't want to do without crocuses, place pots out of reach. When planting crocuses in the garden, make sure that the cat does not dig up the tubers and nibble on them.
