They are often bought as a nice little souvenir, the pretty decorative shapes of the daisy in a small flower pot. But they are more than that and can be cultivated permanently in a pot and bring you joy.
How do you care for daisies in a pot?
Potted daisies thrive when repotted in a larger pot with fresh potting soil and compost. The location should be cool (around 18°C) and additional fertilizer can be helpful during flowering.
Buy daisies in pots
You can buy many varieties of daisies, such as the filled “Roggli red”, directly in the pot. Unfortunately, they don't last very long in a well-heated apartment because you prefer it a little cooler. Temperatures around 18 °C are ideal. It is better to place your Bellis perennis in a cooler room or even on the balcony.
The pots of purchased daisies are often relatively small. This makes retail a lot easier because less space is required. If you would like to continue cultivating the Bellis perennis in a pot, then repot the plants in a larger pot. Replace the used potting soil with new one straight away. You may also want to add a little well-rotted compost.
Planting daisies in the pot
You can transplant self-sown daisies or plants from the garden into the pot or balcony box. Transplanting is possible practically all year round. Since nutrients are always limited in containers, you should support your daisies a little with fertilizer while they are blooming. It's best to give them a dose of compost when repotting.
Sowing daisies in a pot
Daisies don't like acidic soil. Sprinkle the seeds on potting soil (€6.00 on Amazon) or a mixture of soil and sand. Cover the seeds or only lightly with soil, because the daisy is a light germinator.
Keep the seeds and later the seedlings moist. You can also cover the seed pot with a transparent film or a glass plate until the seeds germinate. This happens about two to three weeks after sowing.
Tips for planting in pots:
- Do not choose a location that is too warm
- You may need to fertilize your plants a little
- Transplanting possible practically at any time
- Don’t choose a pot that’s too small
