Bluebells are particularly popular for colorful planting in rock gardens, dry stone walls or as ground cover in herbaceous beds or under tall trees. The pretty plants with their delicate, mostly blue or violet flowers are also ideal for cultivation in a pot or flower box.

How do I care for bluebells on the balcony?

Bluebells thrive on the balcony in pots, flower boxes or hanging baskets. Choose a light to semi-shady location without direct midday sun, provide sufficient water and fertilizer and overwinter the plants in a cool, dark place indoors.

All species suitable for keeping in containers

Basically, all commercially available Campanula species can easily be cultivated in a pot, a hanging basket or a flower bed, as long as they can be placed on the balcony or terrace. However, if you want to cultivate your bluebells indoors, it is better to use specially bred species and varieties, e.g. B. Campanula isophylla. On the balcony, however, the more cushion-like growing species with their long shoots make a good impression in the flower box or hanging basket.

Properly care for bluebells on the balcony

Basically the same rules apply to the care of bluebells on the balcony as for specimens planted in the garden, but with the proviso that you are regularly responsible for providing sufficient water and fertilizer. Unlike garden plants, potted plants do not have the opportunity to take care of themselves because the limited substrate is quickly exhausted. In particular, drying out of the pot in midsummer can result in the death of the plant due to thirst. In winter, it's better to bring the bluebells into the house and keep them as cool and dark as possible over the winter.

Selection of location

In terms of location, you need to be able to place the bluebell out of the direct midday sun, especially on south-facing balconies. A plant board with wheels (€34.00 on Amazon) underneath, on which the pot with the plant stands, is suitable for this. All you have to do is move it into the shade. Bluebells feel particularly comfortable in light to partially shaded locations, but often cannot tolerate full sun.

Tips & Tricks

Container plants rely on your regular care to survive. You have to be particularly careful, especially in small plant containers - such as flower boxes - because mistakes or a lack of watering can quickly have negative consequences.
