Cycad – it is known for its sensitivity. It is not only sensitive to pests, the wrong location and errors in care. It also tolerates frost poorly.
How can you properly overwinter a cycad?
To overwinter a cycad successfully, it should be moved to a cool room (5-10 °C) with high humidity from the end of September. Do not fertilize during the winter and only water sparingly. Slowly move out again from April.
Moving in from the end of September
The first night frost can occur as early as the end of September. In order not to find the cycad frozen, it should be quartered. Ideally it is already in a pot and just needs to be placed in the house.
The following aspects are crucial when overwintering at home:
- cool room with temperatures between 5 and 10 °C
- high humidity
- do not fertilize
- water sparingly
- slowly move out from April
Tips & Tricks
There are a few species that tolerate frost. However, they are only partially hardy. While they can stay outside in wine-growing regions, they should be wintered indoors in cooler locations.
