To overwinter chrysanthemums on the balcony, you should first determine the variety. Hardy chrysanthemums can be left outside, but should be placed on a warm wall, wrapped in a jute sack and covered with leaves. Varieties that are not hardy require a frost-free, bright location in the house.

We usually keep chrysanthemums as annual flowers that are thrown away after they bloom. In fact, they are perennials that can be overwintered on the balcony with very little effort.

However, it is important to first identify the species or variety. There are many hardy varieties of chrysanthemums that can easily be overwintered outdoors. Others, on the other hand, should be kept frost-free in winter under cold house conditions. Leave hardy chrysanthemums on the balcony, but place the pot on a wall that radiates heat. Chrysanthemums that are not hardy, however, overwinter in a bright and frost-free location in the house, ideally at temperatures of up to a maximum of 10 °C.
