A faded cyclamen in a pot is by no means food for organic waste. This perennial can easily be planted in the garden to be kept there over the summer. The cyclamen can also spend the winter time in the garden and enhance its appearance with its flowers.
How to plant and care for cyclamen in the garden?
To plant cyclamen in the garden, choose hardy species such as Cyclamen hederifolium, coum, purpurascens or cilcium. Plant the tuber at least 7 cm deep in a semi-shady to shady area, preferably under deciduous trees, with moist and humus-rich soil.
Hardy cyclamen for the garden
Not all cyclamens are made for the free world. Most species that are sold commercially as potted plants have poor winter hardiness and are therefore not suitable for the garden. But there are also some species that look great and are perfect for outdoor cultivation.
The following species are most preferred by gardeners:
- Cyclamen hederifolium/Autumn cyclamen/Ivy-leaved cyclamen: flowering from August to October
- Cyclamen coum/early spring cyclamen: flowering from February to April
- Cyclamen purpurascens/Summer cyclamen: blooms from August to September
- Cyclamen cilcium/Anatolian cyclamen: flowering from April to May
Planting the cyclamen in the garden: the right location
Task number one should be to offer the cyclamen an ideal location. Outdoors, these perennials prefer partial shade to shady conditions. Places under deciduous trees are recommended.
Set the tuber deep enough
So that the cyclamen can overwinter in the garden without damage, one crucial factor should be taken into account when planting: The tuber should be planted at least 7 cm deep in the soil (with the root tuft facing downwards). Care should be taken to ensure that the soil is moist and rich in humus.
Care: Multiply, fertilize and overwinter
Propagate cyclamen in the garden is not a challenge. These plants like to propagate through self-sowing once they have really gained a foothold. They don't need much care. It is sufficient to fertilize them lightly with compost (€41.00 on Amazon) or another complete fertilizer after flowering and to protect them from the winter sun in winter with leaves, brushwood or spruce branches.
Tips & Tricks
A particularly stunning variety for the garden is the cyclamen Cyclamen coum 'Silver Leaf'. It impresses with its silvery foliage and stands out alongside other perennials.
