Palm trees create a wonderfully Mediterranean ambience on the balcony or terrace and create a magical holiday atmosphere. Almost all types of palm trees can be cared for outside during the warm season. In addition, the plants thrive much better outdoors than indoors and are not as susceptible to pests.
When and how should you put out palm trees?
When putting out palm trees, you should first take into account the conditions of the palm tree's location: Get the plant used to the changed conditions by placing it in a sunny, protected place for two weeks. She can then move to her final summer location. Make sure you have enough water and fertilize every 14 days with special palm fertilizer.
In this article we will deal with the following points:
- How does the palm tree get used to the changed site conditions?
- Which place is suitable?
- How should I water and fertilize?
Get used to the outdoors carefully
Palm trees don't like to be moved, so avoid moving the plant to another location over and over again during the summer months. However, that doesn't mean that you can immediately place them in the blazing sun. First get the plant used to the changed conditions and place it in a sunny, protected place. After about two weeks, the palm tree will have acclimatized and can be moved to its final summer location.
The Location
However, the large number of palm tree species means that not all palm trees love full sun. If you would like to display your palm tree, take into account the individual location conditions of the plant you are cultivating and, if necessary, give it a partially shaded or shady location.
Places where wind constantly reaches the palm tree are also unsuitable. Under these conditions, the attractive fronds would tear unsightly or even snap off, which would greatly affect the appearance. Placing the palm tree right next to a path so that you accidentally bump into the fans as you walk past is also not a good idea. Broken leaves usually die and palm tree species in particular, which already grow slowly, become bald over time.
Watering and fertilizing
In the open field, palm trees need a relatively large amount of water on hot summer days. Water whenever the top centimeters of the substrate feel dry and tip away any standing water in the saucer after a few minutes. Fertilization is carried out every 14 days with a special palm fertilizer (€7.00 on Amazon).
Tip
Since it can get surprisingly very cold in our latitudes in spring, you should not clear out the palm tree too early. Especially with sensitive palm tree species that thrive in the tropics, temperatures must never fall below freezing point, even at night.
