Admittedly, repotting is a messy process that tends to leave crumbs of soil on the kitchen floor or elsewhere. But repotting the cyclamen has a decisive advantage. The reward for this effort is a full bloom!
How should you repot a cyclamen?
Cyclamens should be repotted in late summer to fall. Use conventional potting soil or potting soil loosened with a little sand or clay granules. Place the tuber in the middle of the pot so that 1/3 of it is exposed to the soil, and then water it.
When is the best time to repot
Whether every year or every two years - the best time to repot the cyclamen is in late summer to autumn. Shortly after the end of the flowering period, the cyclamen usually goes to rest. About 8 weeks later it awakens again and develops its first new shoots. Then it's time to repot!
Unplanting and replanting the tuber
First, pick up the pot. If it is made of plastic, massage it from the outside so that the inside is pushed out. If the pot is made of clay, all you need to do is tap on its bottom while it rests upside down over your hand.
Now it is best to briefly submerge the root ball in a bowl of water. The old soil can then be crumbled away from the root ball more easily. Cut off dead roots and divide the tuber if necessary (only recommended for older specimens).
Which soil is suitable
Before the cyclamen goes into the new pot, which should be about 5 cm larger, a suitable soil is chosen:
- conventional potting soil or potting soil meets the requirements
- feel free to loosen up with some sand or clay granules
- Main thing: permeable, neutral to alkaline, nutrient-rich
- do not use sowing or growing soil
Place correctly in the soil and water
- Insert tuber in the middle
- cover with earth
- Bulb should be 1/3 of the way out of the ground
- Press the soil well
- pour on
- Increase watering in the near future
- fertilize after 4 weeks at the earliest
Put the pot in the right location
The location should be bright, but not sunny. Temperatures between 10 and 15 °C are perfect! The hallway, the stairwell, the balcony (frost-free) as well as the bedroom and bathroom are ideal.
Tips & Tricks
As the cyclamen tuber is highly poisonous, you should wear gloves as a precaution when repotting and never leave the tuber unattended if there are small children or pets in the household.
