For the care of Callistemon laevis, it is important to water regularly, use low-lime water, fertilize the callistemon every 2-4 weeks until September and cut it after flowering. Repot in late winter and protect from frost during the winter.
How often should the plant be watered?
The substrate should be kept moist and not allowed to dry out. Therefore, it is important to water Callistemon laevis regularly. Every time you see that the top layer of soil has dried out, you should pull out the watering can. Only use low-lime water! If water has collected in the saucer, pour it away to prevent the roots from rotting!
Does this plant need fertilizer?
Like its relatives, this cylinder cleaner is a heavy feeder. For this reason it should be fertilized at regular intervals:
- from the end of March/beginning of April
- by September at the latest
- do not fertilize in winter
- Keep to a rhythm of 2 to 4 weeks
- conventional liquid fertilizer (€9.00 at Amazon) meets the requirements
- alternatively: give long-term fertilizer in March and June
Why and when does a cut make sense?
After flowering, Callistemon laevis should be cut. Cut away the old inflorescences! No leaves grow there. Don't be too radical! Ostensibly, this cut is intended to promote the emergence of new flowers.
Furthermore, this plant should be thinned out regularly, including removing diseased, weak and crossing shoots. The plant can also tolerate heavy pruning. It is appropriate when it has become too large or to rejuvenate it as it ages.
When should Callistemon laevis be repotted?
The best time to repot this plant, which is preferably kept in a pot or bucket, is in late winter. Between February and March the plant is placed in a slightly larger pot with new soil.
Why is wintering appropriate?
This cylinder cleaner is sensitive to frost and is not hardy in this country. -5 °C is considered its absolute minimum temperature. To avoid frostbite, Callistemon laevis is overwintered from September onwards.
