The cranesbill hybrid “Rozanne” is probably one of the most beautiful geranium varieties. The plant, which only grows up to 40 centimeters high, produces an abundance of magnificent, bright violet-blue flowers that reliably and persistently delight the eye from May to November. So that you can enjoy the longest possible flowering period, you should regularly cut back dead shoots.
How do I cut the cranesbill Rozanne correctly?
To trim the cranesbill “Rozanne” correctly, regularly remove dead shoots and shorten long shoots. In late autumn, cut the plant back to just above the ground and then cover it with frost protection made from spruce branches.
Prune growing “Rozanne” in late autumn
“Rozanne” is not only very flowery, but also extremely vigorous. The shoots, which are up to 150 centimeters long, easily climb smaller trees such as shrub roses. For this reason, you should give this cranesbill variety as much space as possible because, if planted too close to other perennials, it can crowd them out. For the same reason, you should trim “Rozanne” regularly to prevent it from overgrowing your garden. In late autumn, after the last flowering, it is cut back to just above the ground. This cut allows the rather loose-growing “Rozanne” to develop denser and more compact growth.
“Rozanne” as a ground cover
If the long shoots of “Rozanne” are supported, the plant will grow skyward. However, with this growth habit it tends to fall apart quickly. “Rozanne”, on the other hand, is much more suitable as a ground cover, which feels very comfortable in sunny to partially shaded locations and will soon cover larger areas there.

Although “Rozanne” naturally has a fairly long flowering period, this can be extended by regularly removing dead shoots. To do this, simply cut away the corresponding stems; the resulting bare spots will quickly close up again. Pruning is also useful in order to continually encourage the plant to grow more densely.

In contrast to other cranesbill species, “Rozanne” has only proven to be partially winter-hardy and should therefore be covered with a loose frost protection made from spruce branches after autumn pruning.
