Canna takes some time to bloom. In order not to have to wait until summer for their flowers, growing the seeds at home is preferable to sowing them directly outdoors. But how does it work and what other reasons speak for preferring it?

How can I properly prefer Canna?

To grow canna successfully, grind the seeds in late autumn or early February, let them soak in water for a day or two, sow them 2 cm deep in nutrient-poor soil and place them in a warm, bright place. From May the plants can be relocated outdoors.

Why should you prefer the flower tube?

The main reason is that flowering occurs more quickly. Furthermore, there are the following aspects:

  • Seeds have difficulty germinating due to their hard shell
  • Seeds need favorable ambient temperature and humidity to germinate
  • Germination time can take several months without moving forward

What is the best time?

The seeds from the flower tube should best be started to germinate immediately after they have ripened. This is the case in late autumn. They should be sown at home at the beginning of the year or at the beginning of February at the latest. Otherwise, no flowering can be achieved in the same year.

How is the advance performed from start to finish?

Before you start sowing, you should heed the following tip. Grind or file the seeds. For example, a nail file (€5.00 on Amazon) can be used.

The black shell should be rubbed off at the point where there is an indentation on the seeds. But don't remove too much. As soon as the white layer is visible, you should stop filing/sanding.

Soak and sow

The next step is to let the seeds soak. To do this, the ground seeds are placed in warm water. It is enough to leave the seeds in the water for one to two days.

The seeds can then be sown. They are sown 2 cm deep in nutrient-poor soil. To grow, it is advisable to place the cultivation pots in a warm and bright place.

Removal from May

Canna can be planted outdoors from May. The location should be sunny and protected. The soil you should choose is a pre-fertilized, humus-rich and preferably loamy substrate with a pH value between 5 and 6.

Tip

Attention: If the growing pots are near the heater, the soil should be finger tested every day. The heating air causes the earth to dry out quickly. This can mean the end of the germinated seeds.
