Can I keep a Japanese umbrella fir in a pot?
The Japanese umbrella fir can be kept in a pot without any problems as long as it is in humus-rich, nutrient-rich, lime-poor and sandy soil. Partially shady to shady locations are ideal. Regular watering, fertilizing and, if necessary, cutting ensure optimal care.
Is it easy to keep in a bucket?
Whether on the terrace or at the entrance to the house or even on a spacious balcony - the umbrella fir is suitable for keeping in pots. These features are particularly convincing:
- slow growth (20 cm per year)
- Shallow-rooted
- bushy, dense, regular growth
- Cone shape
- easy to keep in check – tolerates cuts
- Maximum height in this country: 10 m (usually smaller)
- frost hardy
Which location is suitable for keeping containers?
The umbrella fir is undemanding in itself. But when keeping a container, particular attention must be paid to the location. It shouldn't be in full sun, as the soil in the pot dries out too quickly. Semi-shady to shady locations are more suitable.
The location should be protected from wind and weather. Places on house walls that face east or west are ideal. In winter, no direct sun should shine on the umbrella fir.
The soil in which it is planted also determines its well-being. It should have the following characteristics:
- humos
- nutrient-rich
- calcareous
- sandy
- permeable
- humid environment

Care in the pot: fertilize, water and cut
If you don't water and fertilize your umbrella fir in the pot regularly, it can cause yellow needles. They can indicate a nutrient deficiency, over-fertilization, drought or waterlogging. You know your umbrella fir best! Think about what she could be missing in such a case!
This is fundamentally important in care:
- cut if necessary
- Do not cut off the leading drive
- fertilize from April (several times a year or twice a year)
- feel free to spray in hot weather
- Keep soil moist
- use lime-free or stale water for watering
- wrap with bubble wrap in winter
