The umbrella fir has been growing on earth for millions of years. While it was once found in Europe a long time ago, today it can only be found in its wild form in Japan. It does not require any special care measures. But does this also apply to cutting?
When and how should you cut an umbrella fir?
When cutting the umbrella fir, topiary is unnecessary as it naturally has a harmonious growth habit. If necessary, diseased or damaged shoots can be removed. The best time to cut is in.
Topiary pruning is unnecessary – naturally beautiful growth form
The umbrella fir naturally has a perfectly formed, harmonious growth habit. Their growth habit is characteristically conical. You should not change this form. Topiary pruning, as with some other plants, is not recommended for this plant.
The naturally flawless growth is regular in its structure. The shoots are densely formed. Therefore, it is not necessary to cut back shoots every year to stimulate their branching.
Pruning is tolerated
Is there anything you don't like about the growth of the umbrella fir? Then grab the scissors:
- regular pruning is tolerated
- rarely necessary due to slow growth (20 to 30 cm per year)
- maximum growth height in this country: 10 m
- Maintain cone shape when cutting
- if there is not enough space available: shorten the sides to make the shape slimmer
Remove sick, damaged, old parts
A cut may also be appropriate to remove old things. For example, if the umbrella fir has yellow needles and these later turn brown, these discolored parts can be cut off for beauty reasons.
You can also boldly cut off diseased shoots that have been drained of nutrients by spider mites, damaged ones (e.g. due to storms or frosts) and weak shoots. Basically, the umbrella fir tolerates cutting without any problems. It usually grows well again.
In winter – the best time for cutting
If you can manage it, you should prune your umbrella fir tree in the winter if necessary. The best time has come in February. Choose a frost-free day and, depending on the diameter of the plant parts to be cut off, grab a pair of pruning shears (€14.00 on Amazon), pruning shears or a saw.
Tip
You should not cut the umbrella fir immediately after fertilizing. Fertilizing stimulates their growth and cutting initially has the opposite effect.
