There are the low-ground-covering and the medium-high species and those that attract attention from a distance as true giants. Whether small or large – which planting time is ideal for ornamental grasses?
When is the best time to plant ornamental grasses?
The ideal planting time for ornamental grasses is in spring, between February and April, as they are protected from frost and can take root better. Depending on the species, they are suitable for sunny locations, shady locations or different types of gardens such as rock gardens, heath gardens or herbaceous beds.
Spring planting is preferable
If ornamental grasses are planted in autumn, they will soon face frost. As a result, they can no longer take root. They need winter protection in the form of brushwood or leaves. Therefore, spring planting (February to April) is generally preferable.
Not only the time, but also the place is crucial
But it's not just the time for planting that is crucial, but also the location. Depending on the type, ornamental grasses are suitable for:
- Rock gardens, heather gardens, prairie gardens, herbaceous beds
- shady locations: sedges, snow marbel, dwarf bamboo
- Sunny locations: Pennisetum, miscanthus, pampas grass
Tip
Non-hardy species that come from tropical regions should only be planted out from April/May when there is no longer any frost.
