The Japanese dogwood (Cornus kousa), also known in this country as the flower dogwood, is a very decorative tree. The richly flowering shrub is cultivated primarily because of its very showy, white flowers, which are up to ten centimeters large. In autumn, the deciduous plant also impresses with its intense foliage color.

Where is the best location for a Japanese dogwood?

The ideal location for the Japanese dogwood is a place in light partial shade or in the sun, but not in the hottest midday sun. The soil should be loose, permeable, nutrient-rich, humus-free and lime-free.

The golden mean is just right

However, the Japanese dogwood only produces its beautiful flowers and autumnal foliage color in an appropriate location. In contrast to native dogwood species, the exotic places great value on a balanced location with plenty of light, but not too strong sunlight. A place in light partial shade or in the sun is perfect for the Japanese dogwood, as long as it does not have to be directly in the hottest midday sun.

Soil should be nutrient-rich and permeable

Choose loose, very well-drained, nutrient-rich and humus-rich soil for this dogwood. This should also contain no lime if possible, which is why it is best to water the plant with very soft water (e.g. rainwater).

Tip

The Japanese dogwood harmonizes wonderfully with vigorously flowering perennials such as delphiniums, daylilies or sunbeams.
