The holly grows wild in many forests, but is protected there. The easy-care Ilex is also very decorative in the garden. If you don't want to buy a lot of plants, then take care of the propagation yourself.
How to successfully propagate holly?
Holly can be propagated by seeds, suckers or cuttings. Propagation using seeds is time-consuming and takes up to three years, but seedlings are quick and easy. Cuttings require a little more patience, but offer a good chance of success.
Propagation by seeds
If you have a lot of patience, you can grow holly from seeds. This is uncomplicated, but very time-consuming. You don't need to do more than press the ripe berries a little into the ground. However, it can take up to three years for these berries to grow into small plants.
However, if you leave the berries, which ripen around October, on the bush, then the birds will take over their work. These fruits are a popular food for local birds. They distribute the seeds of the Ilex through their feces. However, the young plants do not necessarily grow where you want them to. But the holly can be transplanted relatively easily.
Propagation by cuttings
Cuttings, also known as cuttings, are best cut in late summer. To do this, look for strong, slightly woody side shoots. Cut them into pieces about 20 cm long. You can grow these cuttings directly in the garden soil (€6.00 on Amazon) or in seed pots. Alternatively, wait for roots to form in a glass of water. Prune your holly hedge, then you can use suitable cuttings as cuttings.
Propagation by lowering plants
For propagation by planting, take a long shoot and bend it down to the ground. Then mound a little soil over part of this shoot, but the tip should be sticking out of the soil. You may want to weigh the shoot down with a stone so that it stays on the ground. After a while, new roots will form and you can plant your young plant in another place.
The most important things in brief:
- Sowing takes a lot of time
- Lowers are simple and effective
- Cuttings require a little more patience
Tip
If you would like to admire your new holly soon, then it is best to opt for propagation by planting plants, this method is uncomplicated and not time-consuming.
