Pamper yourself or rather leave yourself to it? What makes the Habanero plant produce more hot chilies? We're looking into this question today. And yes, there is some work waiting for you. However, the reward for the effort is anything but sweet!
How do you properly care for a habanero plant?
For optimal care of the habanero plant, it should be grown indoors from February, placed in a sunny location, fertilized moderately and watered as needed. Regular harvesting stimulates new flowering and the formation of more fruits.
Prefer Habanero
The optimal care of a habanero plant is an important prerequisite for a satisfactory chili harvest. But the time factor must not be neglected either. The fruits take around three months to ripen from the time they are sown. Since it is too cold outside for this crop until mid-May, the habanero must be grown indoors from February onwards.
Until germination, the seeds must be kept moderately moist and require at least 24 °C heat and plenty of brightness. Fertilizing is not beneficial at this time. Instead, lean potting soil is used for sowing.
Select location
No matter whether you grow a habanero plant in a pot or in a bed. In both cases the sun must reach it from morning to evening. If it gets enough heat, it only needs minimal care.
Fertilize
Young Habanero plants need a consistent supply of nutrients throughout the entire growing season. However, keep a sense of proportion, as under-supply is more tolerated than over-fertilization.
Pot specimens are planted in commercial potting soil and find enough nutrients in it for about four weeks. After that, a nightshade fertilizer is ideal for them.
Enough compost should be incorporated into the bed before planting. This fertilization can later be refreshed with diluted nettle manure.
Pouring
Habanero plants will not survive in the bed without additional watering. The amount of water administered must be based on needs:
- pay attention to the current weather
- water daily on hot days
- young plants need to be watered more often
- Watering potted specimens more often
- do not cause waterlogging
Note:With yellow, drooping leaves, a habanero plant signals that it is suffering from moisture.
Harvesting
Harvesting can also be seen as a care step. This stimulates renewed flowering, which ultimately leads to even more fruit.
