There are numerous varieties and different cultivars of bitterroot. Some of them are hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -20°C, while others are very sensitive to cold. However, very few of them are very long-lived.
Is bitterroot hardy and how do you overwinter it?
Some varieties of bitterroot are hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to -20 °C, while others are sensitive to cold. For overwintering, we recommend protection from moisture and occasional watering in frost-free times. Young plants and potted plants should overwinter frost-free.
The Lewisia cotyledon is considered winter-hardy and can also tolerate partial shade. It is ideal for dry stone walls or rock gardens. Other varieties tend to bloom in shades of red or purple or die down after flowering. Hybrids are often available commercially. The porcelain rosette, another name for the bitterroot, is quite easy to care for and can be easily propagated because it forms daughter rosettes.
Overwintering young plants
The young plants of the winter-hardy varieties are also sometimes quite sensitive to frost. The roots, which are still tender, do not tolerate prolonged moisture well. Overwintering in a frost-free and relatively dry environment therefore makes sense. This means that the sensitive plants can continue to be supplied with water according to their needs without having to worry about root rot. From April onwards, the strong young plants can be planted outdoors.
Overwintering potted plants
You can overwinter potted plants in a similar way to the young plants. What is particularly important is that their roots are protected from frost, because if they freeze, the plant will die. The biggest problem for bitterroot, however, is prolonged moisture, which leads to root rot.
If you have decided to buy a non-hardy variety of bitterroot, then plant it in a pot or bucket at least for the winter. Of course, you can also cultivate bitterroot in a planter all year round. With its low growth, it is ideal as a balcony or terrace plant, but less suitable for the windowsill of your living room.
