The harp bushes are an entire genus of plants with numerous different plants. Among other things, this also includes the so-called “piss off plant”, Latin: Plectranthus caninus. This sometimes strongly scented plant is not only intended to keep cats away from the garden beds.
Does the harp bush keep cats away from the garden?
The harp bush (Plectranthus caninus) can be used as a “piss-off plant” to keep cats away because its essential oils smell unpleasant in strong sunlight. However, the effect depends on the weather and is less pronounced on young plants.
The effect is also directed against dogs or rabbits, but depends on the weather. Strong sunlight intensifies the scent of the essential oils, which is said to drive away unwelcome guests. Young bushes may not yet be effective enough. Some animals are completely unimpressed by the scent of harp smoke; for many people it is not even noticeable. Nevertheless, allergy sufferers should be careful when handling the harp bush.
