Whether it's graceful growth, its shapely leaves or simply its lush green color - there are several reasons to propagate the Schefflera. You don't necessarily have to buy seeds commercially. A Schefflera that is already growing well can be easily reproduced
How do I grow Schefflera cuttings?
To grow Schefflera cuttings, you can use head or stem cuttings, as well as leaf cuttings. Cut off shoots or long, he althy leaves, place them in a pot of potting soil or a glass of water, keep moist and wait for roots to emerge.
Use head cuttings or stem cuttings
Both head cuttings and stem cuttings are known to root well in the radiant aralia. The time has come in the spring before budding. For the head cuttings use the shoot tips and for the trunk cuttings use parts of the already woody middle part of the plant.
Cut off the shoots and prepare them for planting
Pruning can give you shoots that you can use for propagation from cuttings. This should be noted:
- 15 to 20 cm long
- Cut edge should be slanted
- feel free to let the base of the trunk stick to the cutting
- remove lower leaves
- leave upper leaves
Wait for them to root
Now the shoots go into a pot with potting soil (€6.00 at Amazon). Push it in there about 5 cm. The substrate must then be kept moist to ensure rooting. You are welcome to put a plastic film over it so that the moisture does not evaporate. Place the pot in a warm (20 to 25 °C) and bright location.
You can also place the shoots in a glass of water. They are rooted in that too. Use low-lime water for this. The water should be changed every 2 to 3 days. To root, the glass is placed in a bright place. After several weeks, white root threads appear. Then it's time to plant the cuttings.
Leaf cuttings: You can also make something from the leaves
You can also use the long-stemmed leaves of this houseplant as cuttings. They should still be green and strong. Cut it off along with its long stem.
Then you either put it in a pot with soil or in a glass with water. It's best to cut off 3 to 5 pieces at once, as not all of the leaf cuttings always root.
Tip
Be sure to use a he althy mother plant for the offshoots! Otherwise, existing diseases could also be passed on to the offspring.
