Unlike false jasmine or scented jasmine, real jasmine is not hardy. The ornamental plant, which comes from Asia, likes to spend the summer outdoors. In winter it must be kept in a frost-free place.
Is jasmine hardy?
Is real jasmine hardy? No, real jasmine is not hardy and cannot tolerate sub-zero temperatures. It should be overwintered in a frost-free, cool and dark place in the house in winter to prevent the plant from freezing.
Real jasmine does not tolerate sub-zero temperatures
Even if it is said again and again: real jasmine is not hardy! When gardeners say that their jasmine can easily survive temperatures down to minus 20 degrees, it is false jasmine, which is also called fragrant jasmine.
Real jasmine freezes to death at temperatures around zero degrees. If you grow real jasmine in a pot on the terrace, you must definitely bring it into the winter quarters before the first frost.
The right wintering quarters
It is best to overwinter real jasmine in a cool, preferably dark place in the house. The temperatures should under no circumstances be higher than 10 degrees, rather lower. Therefore, a place in the living room or flower window is not suitable for wintering.
Wintering in the cellar is possible without any problems. Real jasmine is summer green and loses all its leaves in winter anyway.
Real jasmine is poisonous. Therefore, look for a place that children and pets cannot reach.
How to overwinter real jasmine in the house
During the winter, real jasmine needs little care, but you shouldn't neglect it completely:
- don't let it dry out completely
- do not fertilize
- check regularly for white spiders and aphids
Water the real jasmine so that the root ball does not dry out completely. If the top layer of soil is dry, it's time to give some soft water.
After overwintering, slowly get used to the light
From the end of April, you will begin to slowly wake the real jasmine from hibernation.
Place it in the light every hour. After the Ice Saints, the bucket can go back out on the terrace all day.
Cut the real jasmine beforehand and repot it in a larger planter if necessary.
Tip
There is only one variety of true jasmine that is hardy. This is the yellow-flowering species Jasmin nudiflorum. It is the only true jasmine variety that you can keep outdoors all year round.
