How can false jasmine be properly protected in winter?
In order to overwinter false jasmine successfully, no special measures are necessary for older bushes as they are hardy. Only freshly planted young plants should be protected in the first winter with a mulch of compost, leaves, grass clippings or straw.
False jasmine tolerates sub-zero temperatures
The false jasmine - not to be confused with the non-hardy real jasmine - is native to Central Europe and is hardy. For older bushes, no winterization measures are necessary.
Young plants need some time until their roots penetrate deep enough into the soil. You should therefore overwinter freshly planted false jasmine under a mulch cover in the first winter.
The mulch can consist of compost, leaves, grass clippings or straw. It ensures that the soil does not dry out and prevents the cold from affecting the roots too much.
Tip
Since the false jasmine loses all of its leaves in autumn, frost damage is hardly significant, even in severe cold. If shoots are frozen, simply cut them off in spring.
