Is the cylinder cleaner hardy?
The cylinder cleaner is not hardy and requires a protected winter quarters at 5-10 °C. It can only overwinter outdoors in warm regions and with sufficient protection (fleece, foil, leaves and brushwood) if temperatures do not fall below -5 °C.
How hardy is the cylinder cleaner?
The cylinder cleaner cannot be described as hardy. At least it doesn't survive the winter periods in this country without protection. Even temperatures below 10 °C can harm it. It is more of a plant for pot cultivation that can be left outside in summer and should be brought in from autumn onwards.
Does the cylinder cleaner need to be overwintered?
If your cylinder cleaner is outside on the balcony or terrace, you should put it inside in September, at least if you want to enjoy it next year. Overwintering is absolutely necessary for its survival.
Which place is suitable for wintering?
Wintering in the room is more recommended. The winter quarters should have the following characteristics:
- bright
- not exposed to direct sun
- easy to ventilate
- 5 to 10 °C cool
- the warmer the place, the more light is required
How can you get the plant outside through the winter?
If necessary, the cylinder cleaner can also be hibernated outside in warm regions if it is packed properly. However, temperatures should not fall below -5°C at any time. If you have a cylinder cleaner tree, wrap its trunk with fleece (€6.00 on Amazon) or foil. The root area is covered with leaves and brushwood. If necessary, the young shoots are wrapped in a jute bag.
What is important when wintering?
During the winter, this plant needs to be provided with water. Their foliage is evergreen and does not shed. Therefore, it needs a lot of water even in winter. However, you should avoid adding fertilizer. It is also important to ventilate the winter storage room regularly.
After wintering, the following occurs:
- repotting
- cut away frozen/dried shoots
- remove dried leaves
- fertilize little
- increase watering
- slowly get used to direct sunlight
Tip
The cylinder cleaner should not be cleared out before the Ice Saints in May! Otherwise it could be damaged by late frost.
