First carefully grown at home or on the balcony and now the small runner bean plants should move to their final location. But what should you pay attention to when planting?
How should runner beans be planted correctly?
When planting runner beans, you should choose a sunny, wind-protected location. The soil should be loose, permeable and nutritious. Climbing aids and a planting distance of 20-40 cm are necessary. The best planting time is mid/end of May.
Which location is suitable?
Fire beans need a sunny location to thrive. Both sunny balconies and terraces facing southeast to southwest as well as outdoor areas (e.g. garden beds) are suitable for cultivating runner beans. If necessary, you can also choose a partially shaded location. A location sheltered from the wind is also recommended.
The soil: loose, permeable and nutritious
Before you absentmindedly plant the young plants in the ground, you should check whether the soil meets the requirements of the runner bean. The soil should have the following properties:
- profound
- permeable (drain holes are essential in the bucket)
- easy
- nutritious
Plant in the ground
You are welcome to add some compost (€12.00 on Amazon) or guano fertilizer to the soil before planting the seedlings. Place the plants in the prepared planting holes. Now they are surrounded with earth and pressed down well. Then just water!
Decisive: The climbing aid
Fire beans definitely need a stable climbing aid that they can climb up. It is best to attach these or stick them in the ground before planting. The following climbing aids are suitable, among others:
- Wooden scaffolding
- Trellis
- Rank columns
- Poles (arranged like a tent)
- Fences
- attached cords
The correct planting distance
The runner beans, which are poisonous when raw, should be planted at a minimum distance of 20 cm (30 to 40 cm is better). The closer together they are, the more opaque they grow. Then they are also suitable as privacy screens.
When should you plant runner beans?
In mild locations, fire beans can be planted outdoors as early as mid-April/early May. However, it is better not to bring them outside until mid/late May - when frost is no longer expected. The plants should have at least 2 he althy leaves. You should have planted the last runner beans by the end of July at the latest.
Tip
Field beans should be planted in the same place a maximum of every 5 years, as they enrich the soil greatly with nitrogen.
