Purslane frogs – this ornamental plant looks good, but is not very common. It can be cultivated both outdoors and as a houseplant. But what about their frost tolerance? Will she come back next year when she spends the winter outside?
Are purslanes hardy?
Purslane frogs are not hardy and cannot tolerate frost. They are usually cultivated as annuals and should only be planted out from mid-May. In rare cases they can survive in frost-free regions, although the probability of survival is low.
Not hardy – annual
The purslane, which originally comes from mild climates, is not hardy in this country and is therefore largely cultivated as an annual. The plant does not tolerate frost. As soon as the first frost hits it in October, it dies. It is also at risk for late frost in spring. Therefore: Only plant out from mid-May!
There is a chance of survival in frost-free regions
The plant can only survive the winter in mild regions. But you will hardly find such regions in Germany. There should be no frost at all. If so, the plant must be immediately covered with brushwood in the root area. The probability of survival: Low.
The seeds can survive the winter
While the roots lose out even with the slightest frost, the seeds of the purslane can survive. The prerequisite is that you do not cut off the flowers in summer so that the fruit heads with the seeds can develop. The plant often sows itself in spring. Alternatively, it can simply be sown directly.
Place in container culture
It is not uncommon for purslanes to not be planted outdoors, but rather kept in a pot, for example on the balcony or terrace. Then you have a better chance of getting the plant through the winter.
This is how overwintering the edible but not very tasty potted plant works:
- bring into the house from October
- place in a bright place
- Temperatures should be between 15 and 18 °C (e.g. unheated bedroom, stairwell)
- If temperatures are too warm, the risk of pest infestation increases
- water little
- do not fertilize
Tip
Since the purslane is sensitive to moisture, you should protect it especially in winter. It is better to keep the substrate drier than too moist!
