Daisies - with their delicate and lush basket flowers and their dense growth, they are considered THE balcony plants alongside other flowers. What should you consider when choosing a location and when dealing with it?
Why are daisies good balcony plants?
Daisies are ideal for the balcony because they are easy to care for, thrive in pots or boxes and bloom all summer long. They require a sunny to partially shaded location and should be watered and fertilized regularly.
The perfect balcony plants
Several reasons speak for daisies as balcony plants:
- feel comfortable in pots and even in balcony boxes
- bloom all summer long
- decorative
- non-toxic and medicinal
- compact, bushy growth
- easy care
- there are many different varieties with different flower colors
Where should plants go on the balcony?
The daisies look fine in a clay or terracotta pot or next to other balcony flowers such as geraniums and petunias. Balconies that face southeast to west are ideal for them.
They need a sunny to partially shaded location to thrive. Daisies tolerate wind and rain, which is why they can easily be planted in balcony boxes at the front of the railing.
Water abundantly and fertilize generously
On hot summer days, the soil in the planter dries out quickly. That's why it's important to water abundantly, sometimes up to twice a day! The bale should not dry out, but at the same time should not be exposed to accumulated moisture.
From April until the end of August, the daisies on your balcony will be supplied with fertilizer. This is important so that the daisies can bloom for a long time. You can use long-term fertilizer (€14.00 on Amazon), for example in stick form or liquid fertilizer.
Remove spent flowers every day
In the summer you go to the balcony once a day to water the plants. This is also a good chance to cut off the old/wilted daisy flowers. She thanks this by constantly producing new flowers and blooming until autumn.
Get in from the end of October
Many varieties are not hardy and in the pot there is a risk that the root ball will freeze and the plant will dry out (cannot absorb water). So if you want to continue to enjoy your daisy next year, you should keep it bright and frost-free from the end of October.
Tip
So that the daisy does not lose its strength and vegetate, it should be repotted every year. When the opportunity arises, it can also be divided and thus propagated.
