Hornbeams (Carpinus betulus), also known as hornbeams, are not beeches despite their name. Unlike common beeches (Fagus sylvatica), the hornbeam is not poisonous. Hornbeam hedges are therefore also the ideal planting for playgrounds or kindergartens.
Is the hornbeam poisonous?
The hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is not poisonous and poses no danger to people or animals. As an easy-care and harmless plant, it is ideal for hedges in playgrounds and kindergartens.
Hornbeams are not poisonous
Hornbeams belong to the birch family. They are characterized by the fact that they do not contain any toxins, neither in the leaves, flowers nor in the fruits.
In contrast to the common beech, where the beechnuts in particular pose a slight risk of poisoning, the hornbeam nuts are also not poisonous.
You can therefore plant a hornbeam or a hedgebeam hedge without any worries. The hornbeam is particularly popular in playgrounds or kindergartens because of its ease of care and harmlessness.
Tip
Hornbeams are also harmless to animals. If you have a dog and a cat in the house, you should not prefer copper beeches when creating a hedge, but rather the non-poisonous hornbeams.
