How do you plant a sweetgum tree correctly?

To plant a sweetgum tree correctly, choose a sunny to full sun, sheltered location and a deep, humus-rich, loamy, permeable, low-lime and nutrient-rich soil with light moisture. Plant in early fall or spring, ideally individually or at a generous distance from other plants.

Where does the sweetgum tree grow best?

The location should be sunny to full sun. In the blazing sun, this tree produces the most beautiful autumn colors of its leaves! A location in partial shade can form the tolerance zone. It is also advisable to choose a location protected from the wind. The sweetgum tree doesn't like drafty locations.

What demands does the plant have on the soil?

You should also meet your soil requirements. The sweetgum tree wants a deep underground and can also grow in a large container. The earth should have the following characteristics:

  • acidic pH value (ideally around 6)
  • humos
  • loamy
  • never condensed!
  • permeable
  • nutrient-rich
  • calcareous
  • slightly moist

When is the ideal planting time?

You should ideally plant the sweetgum tree when its growing season is coming to an end but there is no frost yet. This would be the case in early autumn around the end of September. Then the tree still has enough time to root until the first frost. Alternatively, you can plant it in October and November or then in spring.

Is the sweetgum tree better on its own or together with other plants?

You could hardly dream of a more beautiful solitaire. The sweetgum tree looks best in open lawns, parks, courtyards, woodland gardens and home gardens. It looks excellent standing alone there. But it can also be combined with other plants such as rhododendrons.

How do you sow the sweetgum tree?

Sowing this tree is less recommended. On the one hand it is difficult and on the other hand it is time-consuming. The seeds initially need a warm and moist time. Finally, they have to be moved into the refrigerator for about 2 months before they can finally be sown again at cool temperatures of around 12 °C.

Tip

Since the sweetgum tree needs a lot of space (crown diameter of up to 4 m), you should ensure a generous distance from other plants and objects!
