White to blue flowers that are shaped like bells and are enthroned on high stems from June to July - the Carpathian bellflower impresses not only with its beautiful color and flower shape, but also with masses of flowers. What is the best way to care for them?
How do you properly care for the Carpathian bellflower?
Caring for the Carpathian bellflower includes regular watering, fertilizing from April to August, pruning after flowering and in autumn or spring, and dividing the plant every 5 years. The plant is hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -20 °C.
Is the Carpathian bellflower drought tolerant or should you water it?
This type of bellflower tolerates temporary drought. However, their ability to deal with dry periods should not be put to the test. It is better if you water them regularly when there is no rain.
The water requirements of this perennial are medium. The soil should be kept moist. It is important to protect this plant from moisture because it cannot tolerate it. Therefore, only water when the top layer of soil has dried - ideally with low-lime water and in the evening.
How much fertilizer is enough?
Such a fast-growing and flowering plant like the Carpathian bellflower consumes a lot of nutrients. Therefore, the nutrient content of the soil should be continually improved in the form of fertilizer. The nutrient requirement is rated as medium to high.
Keep this in mind when fertilizing:
- fertilize from April to August
- fertilize once a week
- periodically
- Use fertilizer in half doses
- Provide with compost in the spring
- For potted plants/balcony plants, liquid flower fertilizer is sufficient (€12.00 on Amazon)
Are Carpathian bluebells hardy or do they have to be overwintered?
The Carpathian bellflower is absolutely hardy. It can withstand temperatures down to -20 °C without any problems. However, if it is in a planter outside, it should be placed on the protected wall of the house over the winter. It is advisable to cut them down beforehand.
How do you prune these perennials?
After flowering, you should cut back the Carpathian bellflower. The purpose of this is to encourage re-blooming in September. You should also use secateurs in autumn or spring to cut the perennial down to 10 cm above the ground. To prevent baldness, pruning makes little sense; instead, divide the plant every 5 years.
Tip
Attention: The plant is prone to disease, especially when the weather is too dry or humid. Downy mildew, botrytis, rust and leaf spot occur every now and then.
