Theoretically, any tree can be transplanted. It is important that the roots are removed from the ground as undamaged as possible. This is still possible with a young beech tree. On the other hand, it is better not to transplant an older beech tree.
How to transplant a beech tree correctly?
To transplant a beech tree successfully, it should be young and transplanted during the dormant season, preferably in autumn. Roots should be lifted out of the ground as undamaged as possible and any kinked roots removed before being planted in the new location.
Don’t transplant older beech trees
You should no longer transplant an older beech tree. It is hardly possible to get the roots of the beech tree out of the ground undamaged without digging up the entire garden.
On the one hand, this requires technical equipment, because an older beech tree is very heavy and cannot be moved so easily. Depending on the size of the tree, an excavator and even a crane may be necessary.
On the other hand, the root system suffers massively from being dug up. The more roots are broken off, the harder it is for the beech to grow back in its new location.
How to transplant a young beech tree
If the beech tree has only been in place for a few years, transplanting usually works better.
- Prepare new planting hole
- Pruning beech trees
- Dig up the tree with as many roots as possible
- with soil on a cloth e.g. B. Put bed sheets
- Install beech in new location
- Come to Earth
- Install support post
- Water beech well
- do not fertilize!
Be careful not to break the roots. It is better to cut off bent roots.
Do not press the soil too hard to avoid damaging the roots. Give the tree a good mud so that it grows faster. But avoid waterlogging. You should only fertilize the beech tree the following year.
Transplant beeches only during the rest period
The right time is a prerequisite for a successful transplant of the beech. Transplanting should only be done during the dormant period.
It is therefore best to replant the beech in autumn. If necessary, you can also do the transplanting in early spring up to February.
The emergence of leaves and flowers begins in March. Then the beech should no longer be transplanted.
