Magnolias are one of the most ancient plants on our planet, as they were probably already widespread at the time of the dinosaurs. The tulip magnolia in particular - a very old variety - can reach very impressive dimensions and be between eight and ten centimeters wide. However, the tree only grows very slowly and grows best when the location and growth conditions are optimally met. This also includes the right planting time.
When is the best time to plant tulip magnolias?
The ideal planting time for tulip magnolias is either late spring (after the Ice Saints between mid and late May) or early autumn. If planting in April, additional frost protection should be provided.
Ideal planting time late spring or early fall
Of all the magnolia species, the tulip magnolia is one of the most sensitive to frost. In particular, their flowering is at great risk from late spring frosts, when the delicate, light pink flowers turn brown and fall off. For this reason, young tulip magnolias should ideally be planted after the Ice Saints between mid and late May or in early autumn. In principle, earlier planting is possible from April, but then the tree should be protected from frost.
Tip
In general, light frost protection is recommended for tulip magnolias in very cold winters as well as a cover (e.g. with gardening fleece (€6.00 on Amazon)) during the flowering period.
