Hardly any other herb is as easy to sow and care as chamomile. In nature, the plant thrives on the poorest soils - the main thing is that it can soak up as much sun and warmth as possible. Chamomile, which blooms lushly with distinctive white-yellow flowers, is also an ornament in the home garden, especially since it is easy to use. When and how should you sow chamomile?
Chamomile can be sown in early autumn (mid-August to late September) or in spring (from the beginning of May). The fine seeds are lightly pressed onto the soil, but not covered. Planting in pots is possible from the beginning of March, with the young plants being transplanted in May.
The optimal time
Basically, the very fine seeds of chamomile can be sown both in early autumn and spring. The advantage of sowing in the fall is that the harvest the following year will in most cases be larger than with plants that are sown in the spring. Autumn sowing should take place between mid-August and the end of September; the resulting plants usually survive the winter without any problems. Spring sowing should be carried out from the beginning of May, but then no further cold period may follow.
Sowing chamomile
Although the very fine seeds of real chamomile can be sown directly into the bed, there is a risk that they will simply be blown away. Chamomile is one of the light germinators, which is why the seeds should only be pressed against the soil but not covered by it. For this reason, growing from seeds is often quite difficult. However, you can get around the problem by simply letting the flower heads fall to the ground in autumn - this will happen all by itself, you don't have to do anything other than wait. After all, this is how chamomile reproduces naturally. During the cultivation period, the chamomile bed should be kept free of any weeds so that the plants have enough space and air to grow.
Prefer chamomile in the pot
It is possible to sow and thus grow chamomile in pots from around the beginning of March. In this way, you can elegantly solve the problem of the cold snaps that often occur in May, which have an unfavorable effect on the germination and growth of chamomile seedlings. Use cultivation or herb soil and place the pot in a bright and warm location, whereby the substrate should be kept moist with the help of a spray bottle (€7.00 on Amazon) - but by no means wet. The young plants are moved into the bed or into a larger pot in May.
Tips & Tricks
You can also use conventional potting soil for sowing in pots, although this should be enriched with garden lime.
