The ball trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides), a variant of the trumpet tree, impresses with its large and heart-shaped leaves that sprout very late. This type of trumpet tree can only be propagated through grafting and has much slower growth than conventional representatives of the Catalpa genus. This makes them also suitable for smaller gardens or for keeping in containers.

The globe trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) reaches an annual growth of 20-30 centimeters, with a maximum height of 4-6 meters, depending on the variety. The small variety “Nana” grows up to 5 meters high and 3.5 meters wide.

While normal trumpet trees can grow up to 15 meters high and at least as wide under optimal conditions, the ball trumpet tree - depending on the variety - only reaches a height of up to four to six meters. It can also become just as wide, although the crown naturally retains a spherical shape, at least in the first few years, and only later grows wider. On average, the ball trumpet tree grows between 20 and 30 centimeters per year, and its growth can be easily limited by pruning measures.
