The trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) can reach considerable dimensions - the tree grows up to 18 meters high in good conditions and achieves a crown width of up to 10 meters or more. It's no wonder that many garden owners have to look for a new location for the impressive tree because the old one is simply too small. But there are also other reasons that speak for replanting - for example because the tree does not feel comfortable in its current location or because verticillium wilt has broken out there.

How to properly transplant a trumpet tree?

To successfully transplant a trumpet tree, dig a trench around the root disk in spring. Replant the tree in autumn, ideally during the leafless period. The following spring you should cut back the shoots by at least a third.

Younger trumpet trees can often be moved easily

Transplanting the tree is usually easy until it is about four to five years old, after which it could become difficult simply due to the sheer size of both the above-ground and underground parts. The main problem is the fine thread roots, which are of great importance for the well-being and survival of the tree, but are often seriously damaged when moved. These roots are mainly located on the edges of the rootstock, which means they are very far away from the trunk and are therefore particularly at risk. Improper transplanting can result in the death of the trumpet tree, which is why basic preparation is absolutely necessary - the older the tree, the more important.

Transplanting may cause temporary growth arrest

Despite all precautions, transplanting can cause shock, which sometimes does not necessarily lead to the death of the trumpet tree. Instead, this can stop growth - and often also flowering - and often remain in this state for several years. In such a case, only patience and careful care will help. Growth will begin again as soon as the tree has established itself in its new location and has once again developed a strong rootstock.

Transplanting a trumpet tree - This is how it's done

When transplanting a tree, it is best to proceed as follows:

  • Dig a trench around the root disk of the trumpet tree in spring.
  • This should be around 30 to 40 centimeters deep and around 10 centimeters wide.
  • The stitch should be made slightly diagonally towards the tree.
  • The older the tree, the larger the diameter of the circle.
  • The following fall you finally replant the tree.
  • The actual transplanting always happens in the leafless period.

Tip

A few months later - in spring - you should cut back the above-ground shoots by at least a third.
