Ranunculus bushes are often found in front gardens. They impress with their long-lasting blooms. Their growth is less sedate. And yet it is worth propagating them precisely because of their pretty flowers and their undemanding nature!
How to propagate a ranunculus bush?
Ranunculus bushes reproduce easily via root runners, which can be separated and planted. Alternatively, cuttings can be cut and rooted in summer or seeds can be sown after they have gone through an artificial cold period.
Ranunculus bushes reproduce on their own
Propagate a ranunculus bush is child's play. This shrub reproduces on its own. But this is not always wanted. If you set up a root barrier from the outset, you will partially prevent the ranunculus bush from spreading.
Ranunculus bushes reproduce via their root runners. They form numerous of these runners in perfect locations. They shoot up shoots so that over time a narrow bush becomes a real hedge.
Separate the runners and plant them
If you want to control the urge to reproduce, you can do this by simply separating the runners. The runners have relatively shallow roots and are therefore easy to pull out or dig up. Now all that's left to do is plant in a suitable location.
Cut cuttings and let them root
Summer is the optimal time to cut the ranunculus bush. It is not uncommon for there to be masses of clippings that are suitable for propagation from cuttings.
Remove the leaves in the lower third and place the cuttings in a pot with potting soil (€6.00 at Amazon). Then it is important for rooting that the soil is kept moist. Alternatively, you can place the cutting in a glass of water. It also roots there after about 4 weeks.
Sowing: step by step to success
The seeds of the ranunculus bush are poisonous. But they are useful because you can use them to propagate the plant. This is how it works:
- cover lightly with sowing soil
- Keep bright and warm for 8 to 12 weeks
- keep moist
- artificial cold period: put in the refrigerator (or balcony) for 2 months
- then place it warmer again until germination
You should put the young plants outside in spring. Sunny, semi-shaded and shady locations are suitable. Care for the small ranunculus bushes properly to protect them from diseases!
Tip
The fresh cuttings and runners that have been planted in pots should definitely be protected from frost in winter!
