Do you always want a portion of fresh greens to nibble on? This is not only good for rabbits and co, but also for you. Dandelion is an easy-to-grow plant that is tasty and rich in nutrients. How do you grow them?
How to grow dandelions in a pot?
To grow dandelions successfully, sow the seeds 1-2 cm deep in a pot at least 25 cm deep with sowing soil. Place the pot in a sunny to partially shaded location and keep the soil moist. The seedlings appear after about 4 weeks.
Why balcony boxes are not suitable for breeding
Anyone who comes up with the idea of simply sprinkling dandelion seeds in the balcony box should not be surprised if nothing comes of the cultivation. The plants will probably sprout, but will die soon. The reason: The dandelion needs a deep underground. It forms a long and strong taproot.
You should therefore plant or sow the dandelions in a deep pot - or directly outdoors, for example in the front garden or in front of the terrace. If you choose a pot, it should be at least 10 cm in diameter and at least 25 cm deep.
What location does the dandelion need?
A suitable location is required for successful breeding. Dandelions don't grow in the shade. The wild herb needs a sunny or, at worst, partially shaded location in order to grow well. It doesn't value a protected location - it's quite robust.
Growing the plant from seeds
Digging up a plant from the wild and putting it in a pot at home is not recommended. It's easier to sow dandelions. All you need to do is collect a few of the seeds. The seeds can be sown from March until August.
How to do it:
- fill small pot with sowing soil (€6.00 on Amazon)
- Sow seeds 1 to 2 cm deep
- press
- keep moist
- place in a warm place
- Seedlings appear after 4 weeks
- repot after 8 weeks
New plants every year – without any involvement
One dandelion plant is no longer enough to satisfy your or your pets' appetite? Do not worry. If you give the plant the opportunity to form its seeds, it will self-seed if there is enough space.
Tip
Planting dandelions outdoors should be carefully considered. Once established and not stopped in its bloom, dandelions spread extremely quickly and can soon become a pest.
