How to propagate pampas grass?
Pampas grass can be propagated by sowing or dividing the rootstock. When sowing, seeds are sown thinly in potting soil or coconut fiber. When dividing, the root ball is divided with at least two eyes and planted in the garden.
Growing pampas grass from seeds
When sowing, it is better to use seeds that you have bought from specialist retailers. With self-collected seeds, it is a gamble as to what characteristics the young ornamental grasses will have. The fronds may later have a completely different color.
You also don't know whether home-grown seeds produce male or female plants. Male pampas grass develops few or no flower fronds and is therefore not as decorative. Almost exclusively seeds for female pampas grass are available in stores.

The easiest way to propagate pampas grass is to divide the root ball. Not only is this guaranteed to succeed, you also have the certainty that the new plants will have exactly the same properties as the mother plant.
Dig up all or part of the eyrie. Pierce it in the middle with the spade or separate smaller pieces. In order to propagate pampas grass from the root pieces, they must have at least two eyes. The pieces should be about the size of a man's fist.
Plant the pampas grass roots approximately ten centimeters deep into the soil at the desired location.
Tip
If the clump of pampas grass has become too expansive, it is a good idea to divide it in spring to rejuvenate it. At the same time, rotten root parts are removed. The he althy root pieces are ideal for propagation.
