In spring, flower bowls are often sold in which forget-me-nots grow alongside other plants. This looks very pretty at first. But it should not be forgotten that forget-me-nots are not houseplants. You only stay in the room for a short time.
Are forget-me-nots suitable houseplants?
Forget-me-nots are not suitable as long-term houseplants as they only survive for a short time indoors due to temperature, humidity and space conditions. It is better to plant them outdoors to allow a longer flowering period.
Forget-me-not only thrives for a short time in the room
The air in the room is not ideal for forget-me-nots. It's too warm, the humidity is too high or too low and the pot is usually much too small.
The conditions in the room favor pest infestation. Fungal diseases also occur more frequently at room temperature and may infect other plants in the room.
You can only achieve truly beautiful flowers if you grow forget-me-nots outdoors. You should therefore generally not keep forget-me-nots as houseplants.
Is it worth planting forget-me-nots?
If you were given or bought a forget-me-not as a houseplant, it is best to plant the flower in a pot or, even better, in the garden.
The forget-me-not grows and blooms much longer.
However, after the flowering period, the splendor is over here too. Most forget-me-not plants are biennial and are consumed after flowering. Planting out is only worthwhile for special species or if you want to try to harvest seeds for propagation.
Planting forget-me-nots
If you want to plant the forget-me-not, prepare a partially shaded location with nutritious, well-drained soil.
When planting in a pot, make sure there is a sufficiently large drainage hole so that the irrigation water can drain away and avoid waterlogging.
Water the forget-me-not regularly so that the soil does not dry out completely.
Propagate forget-me-nots
So that you can enjoy your gifted forget-me-not for longer, you can try to multiply it. It will then bloom next year.
Cut cuttings with a piece of root still attached to the bottom and place them in a glass of water. Roots form there.
If enough roots have grown, plant the cutting in a pot and overwinter it in a cool, bright location until next spring.
Tip
Forget-me-not plants purchased at hardware stores do not always produce germinable seeds. They are pre-treated so that they bloom earlier. It is more likely to be possible to propagate the plant through root division or cuttings.
