Tree peonies are also known as tree peonies. At 1 to 1.50 m, they grow significantly larger than normal peonies. They are also considered to be more robust and resistant to frost, drought and disease. But how do you plant them successfully?
How to plant tree peonies correctly?
To plant tree peonies successfully, choose a sunny, wind-protected location and loose, humus-rich soil. Plant bare-root specimens in autumn, preferably between August and October, leaving 70-100 cm between plants.
Which location has a positive effect on growth?
Since tree peonies live up to 60 years, the choice of location should be carefully thought out. These plants love warmth and grow best in sunny locations. A location in partial shade can also be an option if necessary. A location protected from the wind is also important.
What should the earth be like?
Whether on the edge of a tree or in an open space - plant your tree peony(s) in soil that ideally has the following characteristics:
- Depth of at least 50 cm
- high humus content
- good permeability
- pH value between 6 and 9
- medium lime content
- good ability to store water
- ideal: sandy loam soils
When do you plant the plants and which planting partners are suitable?
Bare-root tree peonies are planted in autumn. If you want them to root well until spring, the period between August and September is perfect. But they can still be planted well in October. Suitable plant neighbors include:
- Fat Hen
- larkspur
- Daylilies
- Sword Iris
When do tree peonies bloom?
Tree peonies bloom at a young age. Every year there are more flowers. The flowering period usually begins around mid-May. It lasts a month, i.e. until around mid-June.
How should the planting distance be measured?
Tree peonies are not particularly competitive. Therefore they should not be planted near spruces, yews, etc. You should maintain a distance of 70 to 100 cm from other tree peonies. Each individual plant takes up about 1.5 square meters of space.
How is planting done step by step?
First, a 30 to 50 cm deep planting hole is dug and the soil in it is loosened. The cutting-tolerant plant is planted with its grafting point 10 cm below the surface of the soil. Then cover with soil, tamp down and water!
Tip
Rockii hybrids and Lutea hybrids are considered particularly resilient and worth planting. They require little care.
