Peonies tolerate transplanting extremely poorly. It often takes two years for them to recover from the stress and bloom again. It is therefore important to choose an ideal location right from the start. But where do these plants really feel at home?
Where is the best location for peonies?
The ideal location for peonies is shaded, preferably under light deciduous trees and not exposed to the blazing midday sun. They prefer medium-heavy soils with a high clay content, good permeability, high humus and nutrient content as well as moderate moisture and a slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH value.
Likes to be out of the sun
Although peonies grow well in the sun, if given the choice, they would choose a sunny location. The place to grow and thrive can be under light, deciduous trees. Locations where the peonies are not exposed to the blazing midday sun are recommended.
Areas to plant peonies
A peony looks magnificent as a solitaire on an open lawn. But even on the side of the path, in the background of the garden, in the fence area and in the bed, it does not miss its effect when it is in bloom. It can even thrive on a balcony or terrace, as long as the location is not directly south and is completely protected.
A suitable substrate at the location
The soil at the location also plays a minor role. Peonies don't particularly like heavy, clay-rich or very sandy, light soils. In the former they suffer from wetness and rot, in the latter from dryness. Medium-heavy soils with a high clay content are better.
It is also advantageous if you plant your peony in a substrate with the following characteristics:
- well drained
- humus-rich
- medium to high nutrient content
- moderately humid
- slightly acidic to slightly alkaline
Tip
If you want to plant your peony in a pot, only deep containers should be considered! The peony develops a deep root system and needs a pot that is at least 40 cm deep.
