A lot can go wrong when cutting, no less when fertilizing, and yet the Japanese peony is so popular. This is mainly due to their fabulous flowers, which are red, pink, white or colored in intermediate colors. How do you propagate them?
How to propagate Japanese peonies?
To propagate a Japanese peony, you can use grafting, sowing seeds or division in the fall. When grafting, a shoot is grafted onto another shrub peony, seeds are sown after cold treatment and the perennial is divided in autumn.
Refining – how does it work?
As a rule, Japanese peonies are refined specimens. To obtain another plant with the same properties, it is necessary to use the method of grafting. To do this, you need a base like the mother plant and a scion of the plant. The shoot is grafted onto the rootstock or roots of another shrub peony.
Seeds for propagation
If you don't particularly value identical properties, you can also propagate your Japanese peony using seeds. However, this is a rather lengthy matter.
How sowing works:
1. Expose seeds to a cold period lasting several weeks (e.g. in the refrigerator).
2. Sow seeds 1 cm deep in potting soil (€6.00 on Amazon).
3. Keep substrate moist.
4. Place in a warm place.5. Plant in a suitable location from a size of 10 cm.
Division in autumn
Many Japanese peonies are perennials. You can tell this because they grow to between 50 and 60 cm tall and retreat into the ground in the fall of each year. If you have a Japanese peony that grows as a perennial, propagating it is easy!
Between October and November is the ideal time to divide the perennial. After pruning, dig up the perennial and clean the root area so that you can clearly see the buds.
Now divide the root piece into as many parts as you need. You can use a knife or spade to do this. It is important that each section has at least 3 buds. Then just plant, water and you're done!
Tip
It can take several years until the newly propagated specimens bloom for the first time. Be sure to take this into account.
