Fungal spores settle on the leaves and can even overwinter adhering to them, only to strike again next spring. For this reason in particular, it is recommended to cut back peonies in the fall before overwintering.
When and how should you cut back peonies for overwintering?
Answer: Perennial peonies should be cut back in September/October when the leaves turn yellow. Shrub peonies do not require pruning, but can be shortened to the first bud in autumn to preserve flower buds for the next year.
Radically cut down perennial peonies
Some gardeners radically cut back their perennial peonies immediately after flowering. This is a mistake! The roots continue to draw strength from the above-ground parts of the plant until autumn. Only cut back your perennial peonies when the leaves turn yellow, around September/October!
Cut bush peonies if necessary
In principle, shrub peonies do not need any pruning. But if you're planning on doing it anyway, autumn is a good time to shorten it:
- shorten to the first bud
- whoever cuts more removes the flower buds for next year
- Use sharp, previously cleaned secateurs (€14.00 on Amazon)
Tip
If individual shoots are frozen after winter, you can cut them back in spring.
