Peonies are hardy in this country. Nevertheless: Freshly planted specimens, those that are in rough locations and in pots, should be protected in winter. But how?
How to protect and overwinter peonies in winter?
In order to overwinter peonies successfully, perennial peonies should be cut back in autumn and the root area covered with brushwood. Potted plants should be placed in additional protection and, if necessary, wrapped with fleece (€6.00 on Amazon) or jute.
Pruning and protecting perennial peonies
Peonies outdoors are cut down in autumn to just above the ground. You can then cover the plants in the root area with brushwood. However, this protective layer should be removed again in spring!
Moving and protecting potted plants
Peonies in the pot don't need to be brought in. They can stay outside too:
- cut down in autumn
- Bucket protected e.g. E.g. place it on the wall of the house, under an eaves etc.
- Cover the root area with brushwood or pine branches
- in case of severe frost: wrap the bucket with fleece (€6.00 on Amazon) or jute
Tip
If you want to get a shrub peony safely through the winter, you should tie its shoots together to protect them from being broken off by a snow load.
