Lantanas are very sensitive to frost and must therefore be kept indoors over the winter. In order to prepare the plant for winter rest, some care measures are necessary in advance. This also includes targeted pruning.
How do I cut back the lantana for overwintering?
Section: To overwinter the lantana, you should first remove any parts that have faded. Pruning differs depending on the wintering location: light topiary for warm rooms, shortening shoots by a third for bright, cold rooms and shortening shoots to a hand's width for dark rooms.
How do you cut back the lantana?
First, carefully cut out everything that has faded. How much the plant is shortened afterwards depends on where you overwinter it:
- If the lantana moves to a warm room, only a light topiary is carried out.
- For overwintering in a bright, cold room, you can shorten the shoots by around a third. This means that the small shrub requires less space and is easier to store.
- If the plant overwinters in a very dark room, all branches are cut back to a hand's width. Due to the lack of leaves, the light requirement drops to zero.
Tip
Since the lantana is not winter-hardy, the small shrub cannot be overwintered outdoors. Even temperatures below five degrees are not good for her and can cause serious damage.
