Lantanas are a little miracle of nature that every garden lover can bring to their balcony or terrace. The delicate flower umbels change color from the time they bloom until they finish blooming. Since not all flowers bloom at the same time, the small shrub is adorned with a fascinating display of colors. Unfortunately, the lantana is not winter-proof and has to overwinter indoors. But can you put the flowering plant out again in spring?
When can a lantana be put outside again?
A lantana can be put outdoors again in spring as soon as night frosts or sub-zero temperatures are no longer expected. Acclimate the plant to the sun slowly by initially placing it in the shade and then in the sun for a few hours a day and continuing this for 2-3 weeks.
Cold sensitive beauty
The lantana does not cope well with frost and has to move to its winter quarters when the temperatures fall below five degrees.
If the temperatures are mild, the lantana feels much more comfortable outdoors. After hibernation, you can only put the plant back on the balcony when there is no longer a risk of night frosts or sub-zero temperatures. In our latitudes this is usually only the case after the Ice Saints.
Get used to it slowly
Lantanas are sun worshipers, if the location is too shady they only produce a few or no flowers. However, you should not suddenly place plants that have been indoors for a long time in full sun. The leaves burn and because the plant needs some time to regenerate, flowering is delayed.
So proceed as follows:
- Place lantana in a protected place in the shade.
- If there is a threat of cold at night, first bring the small shrub back into the house. '
- Get used to the sun little by little. The morning and afternoon hours are ideal for this.
- After about two to three weeks, the plant will have gotten used to the changed conditions and can be moved to its final location.
Tip
Remember that the lantana grows expansively and at the same time should be given a rather small pot when repotting. In places where there is occasional gentle wind, we recommend weighing down the planter with a few large stones or placing it in a planter. If the lantana falls over or the wind pulls too harshly on the branches, they quickly break off.
