The propagation of flower dogwood depends on whether your plant is a wild species or a cultivated form. While wild forms can be propagated quite easily, cultivated forms are often hybrids.
How can the flower dogwood be propagated?
To propagate a flower dogwood, the methods of planting and division are best. Sowing is also possible for seed-forming varieties. Propagation through cuttings is less promising because they do not root easily.
These hybrids usually produce sterile flowers. This means that they have no seeds at all, or at least no seeds that can germinate. Therefore, propagation by sowing is not possible for these plants. However, they can be propagated using cuttings, division or planting.
If, on the other hand, it is a grafted plant, then root cuttings are not suitable for propagation because the shoots do not come from the grafted part of the plant. Here you can try propagation by planting or sowing if seeds are available.
Can I propagate my flower dogwood by sowing?
If your flowering dogwood produces seeds, you can collect them and sow them. Carefully remove the pulp from the seeds, this prevents the seeds from molding and improves germination. In some varieties, the seeds need cold to germinate. Place these seeds in the refrigerator for a few days or sow these varieties in a pot that you leave outside over the winter.
How can I best propagate my flower dogwood?
Since dogwood cuttings do not root so easily, propagation by planting or division is recommended. Bend a strong shoot towards the ground, cover it with a little soil over a length of about 20 cm and weigh it down so that it stays in the ground. After a while, roots form there and the young plant can be separated from the mother plant.
As long as your dogwood is still a manageable size, you can divide it. Place the resulting partial plants in the soil at the desired location. However, division only works with relatively young dogwoods. At some point the plant is too big and too unwieldy for that.
Tips for Propagating Flower Dogwood:
- Sowing possible with seed-forming varieties
- Cuttings do not root so easily
- Simplest way of propagation: lowering or division
Tip
The easiest way to propagate your flowering dogwood is to form sinkers. You can transplant the rooted young plants as you wish.
