The easy-care winter jasmine does not need regular pruning to thrive, but it tolerates it very well. This way it branches better and produces plenty of new shoots on which it can bloom next winter.
When and how should winter jasmine be cut?
Winter jasmine should be pruned after flowering in April by shortening the shoots to about a fifth of their length. Older plants benefit from pruning every three years; radical pruning is also possible, as winter jasmine blooms on young shoots.
When is the best time to prune?
Once the flowering period is over around April, then it is the right time to prune. Winter jasmine blooms on annual shoots, not on old ones. Shorten the shoots to about a fifth of their previous length and the plant will sprout again. Your winter jasmine will quickly return to its old size because it grows very easily.
Older plants should be pruned approximately every three years in order to stay in good shape and develop enough flowering shoots. If you have not pruned your winter jasmine for a few years, or have only pruned it a little, then it can be a radical pruning. The plant recovers from this quite quickly.
If you forget to prune in spring, you don't necessarily have to wait until next year. The winter jasmine can also tolerate a cut in the summer. However, you should not proceed too radically so that your winter jasmine has some shoots on which flowers will form next winter.
Pruning winter jasmine in the pot
Winter jasmine in the bucket in particular can tolerate regular cutting so that it doesn't become too sprawling. If you give the plant a support, it will reach a height of up to 2 m. Without a trellis, it will only be about half as tall. If the winter jasmine in the pot is too big for you, then it can be cut back radically.
Cut winter jasmine for the vase
Winter jasmine can also be cut very well for the vase. The best time to do this is just before the flowers open. Depending on the weather, this can happen as early as December or as late as January.
Cut some shoots of your winter jasmine that have a particularly large number of buds. Since winter jasmine has no foliage at this time, combine the branches with some fir greenery or with branches of evergreen plants. This way you have a beautiful winter bouquet for your home, ideally even for Christmas.
